Picture Perfect: How to Choose The Best Location for Your Outdoor Photo Shoot & 5 Things You Need to Consider

“Where will Our session take place?”

Once you pick a date and book a session with me, the question of “Where will the session take place?” is often the first thing to come up!

Lower level Dellwood Park, Lockport (November) Very unique spot with a lot of WOW factor. This location can be a challenge for some to find as it requires a Google Maps pin instead of an address. The lower level of the park is NOT accessible for strollers or wheelchairs and requires some walking with stairs to get to. Can work for morning or evening sessions and is ideal year round and shines in the Fall! Can work for larger extended family sessions if everyone is able to walk and maneuver stairs.

Honestly, it’s a valid question, often times with a variety of options!

I’m here to help you! I can even choose for you, in the event that you don’t have a preference! And while I love scoping out and finding new places to photograph my families… I do have some tried and true go-to favorites!

I’m going to break down some of the things that make the locations I choose special, as well 5 things to consider when choosing a location for your outdoor photo session.

*** Please remember, during peak Fall Season, most of my dates will have predetermined locations to keep the season running smoothly. So keep these examples in mind if you’re thinking of a fall session.

Hickory Creek Junction, New Lenox (June). Lighting is ideal in the evening only, June through November. Not hard to find, but does require knowing how to follow a Google Map pin. Parking is often never an issue. Can be accessed in part with strollers or wheelchairs. Can work for larger extended family sessions.

1. First and Foremost: LIGHT!

Not all outdoor light is created the same. Any professional photographer will tell you that LIGHTING is one of the (if not THE) most important aspect of any outdoor location, and there are DEFINITELY some locations with better light than others. Also, some locations may have AMAZING evening light, but may be way too harsh in the morning hours.

Light creates shadows, highlights, and contrast which can add depth and ambience to the finished photograph. Direction, intensity, and quality of the available light are something that must be considered. Often times, a specific spot may look like a gorgeous photo location to the average person, only for the professional photographer to notice harsh lighting coming from the wrong direction at the wrong time of day.

Lighting is the reason my outdoor sessions are booked when they are! Early morning and evening light will always be the ideal lighting for outdoor portraits. The sun is low in the sky and angled in such a way to create the most soft and flattering light, often without harsh shadows and blown out highlights.

Hickory Creek Junction, New Lenox (October). Lighting is ideal in the evening only, June through November. Not hard to find, but does require knowing how to follow a Google Map pin. Parking is often never an issue. Can be accessed in part with strollers or wheelchairs. Can work for larger extended family sessions.

Birdhaven Gardens, Joliet (October). Easy to find with an address to put into your GPS. Can work for mornings or evenings. Ideal for flowers, but gardens aren’t in full bloom until late June, but it is a great location from June -Snow sessions. Is accessible for strollers or wheelchairs. Parking is usually not an issue. Location is used for outdoor weddings and very popular, so crowds can be a concern. Can work for larger extended family sessions.

Frankfort Pond/Walking Path (June). Parking to access this area of town is often easier to come by than the main store front area. It iss ideal for evening, but can work during the early morning. Works best for summer and fall. It does require some walking and is mostly accessible for strollers or wheelchairs. The path is popular and can get busy and crowded with walkers and bike riders. It is also a popular spot with other photographers in the area.

2. Vibe: Urban vs Prairie vs Gardens vs parks

One of the first things I ask clients to consider before I offer suggestions on location is the VIBE they want their finished images to have. Are you loving the interest of architectural elements in a more urban setting? Or are you after manicured gardens with colorful flowers? Are you loving the idea of tall prairie grasses in an open field, or do you love the look of tall trees in a park type setting?

Downtown Frankfort (April). I have several meeting spots that are all easy to find via an address and GPS. Lighting is idea for morning or evening sessions. Parking and crowds can often be a concern as the area is often very busy on weekends and evenings.. Location works year round and is a great option during the winter, early spring, and mornings. Does require some walking around for the full variety. Not recommended for larger extended family sessions.

Downtown Lockport (October). Easy to find with a GPS but parking and crowds can sometimes be an issue. This location requires walking to visit the variety of spots that I use. Can be accessible for a stroller or wheelchair but we may be limited in the spots we visit. Works for morning or evening light and can be a great year round option with a lot of unique spots for big variety in a gallery.

Hadley Valley Preserve, New Lenox (June). Easy to find with an address for GPS, parking is not an issue. Ideal for evening light only. Is easily accessible for strollers or wheelchairs. Is the prettiest May-November. This location works great for larger extended family sessions. It is a nature preserve and walking path open to the public.

Lilacia Park, Lombard (April. Easy to find with an address and GPS. Ideal for mornings or evenings. Parking is public street parking and can be limited at peak times. The park is very popular so crowds can be an issue on weekends, so weekdays are ideal. Accessible for strollers or wheelchairs. A GEM for flowers and blooms from Early Spring - Late Summer. Not ideal for larger family groups.

Birdhaven Gardens, Joliet (October). Easy to find with an address to put into your GPS. Can work for mornings or evenings. Gardens and flowers aren’t in full bloom until late June, but it is a great location from June -Snow sessions. Is accessible for strollers or wheelchairs. Parking is usually not an issue. Location is used for outdoor weddings and very popular, so crowds can be a concern on weekends. Can work for larger extended family sessions.

3. Accessibility

Getting to the ideal spot is definitely something that has to be taken into account for some families! If we are photographing a larger extended family, and you have people coming from out of town, from different directions, or some who just aren’t good navigating their GPS, we may want to consider a spot that is easy to find for all! Believe it or not, not all locations have a hard address to give out. Some of my spots are a google map pin where I will meet you - and some people want something more straight forward and that’s OK!

Another thing to consider is if you need stroller or wheelchair accessibility. Most locations can accommodate either, but with some, we may be limited with where on the grounds we can go. A few locations are NOT accessible for a wheelchair or stroller, so that is something we can discuss before hand.

Lake Katherine, Palos Heights (August). Easy to find with an address and GPS. Can work for morning or evening sessions. Is ideal from Spring-Fall, but can also work for snow sessions. The park is very popular so parking is often an issue even on weekdays. Walking is required and this location may be a challenge for strollers or wheelchairs but is technically “accessible”. Not ideal for larger family groups.

Upper Level of Dellwood Park, Lockport (October). Finding the location will need the use of a Google maps pin instead of a hard address. Ideal for morning or evening and is beautiful in Spring-Fall. Doesn’t require a lot of walking and can accommodate a stroller or wheelchair. Works well for larger family groups.

Trantina Park, Homer Glen (September). This location offers some fun rustic barns and other structures. It is currently under construction so I always like to take a visit prior to booking to check on the current accessibility. Ideal for evenings, but can work for morning as well, Easy to find with a Google Map pin. Low profile grass area that is accessible for strollers or wheelchairs. Works well for large family groups.

4. Permits, Permissions & Other Special Concerns

Some locations will require special permission or a permit to use the property for a professional photo session. If a location does charge a permit fee, that would be an additional cost on top of the session fee I charge. So, it is definitely something to consider if there is a spot you have in mind.

If you have private property that you would like your session to take place at, I am always more that willing to work at new locations! Prior permission will be required (to be obtained by client) before I will agree to work on anyone’s private land.

Most locations within the City of Chicago now require a permit that has to be obtained ahead of time. Most locations further than 30 minutes out outside of New Lenox will also incur an additional travel fee in addition to your session fee.

*** If a location does charge a permit fee - I will always tell you that BEFORE we decide on a final location.

Private Property in Homer Glen - Requires previous permission as well as a permit for use. Not ideal for large family groups.

Cantigny Park, Wheaton (September). Location requires and additional permit fee as well as a parking fee. STUNNING manicured and professional gardens. Can work for morning or evening light. Ideal from Spring-Fall. Requires walking but also wheelchair and stroller accessible. Can work well for larger family groups.

Porter Beach, Indiana (September). Beach sessions are ONLY done right at sunrise or sunset. Extra travel fees will apply. Parking and crowds are often something to take into consideration. Beach sessions can technically work year round, however they are ideal in spring and fall when the weather is still pleasant - but the crowds aren’t at peak.

Private land, Mokena (permission obtained by client before the session).

5. Time of year & Time of day

While MOST locations can work any time of the year, sometimes the season your session is scheduled in may narrow down our location choices. Not to mention…some locations look vastly different depending on the season we choose to do the session.

If you have your heart set on tulips and lilacs, for example….I have a spot (ok… maybe 2 ) that can work. If you absolutely love the idea of a snow session, I have a handful of tried and true spots that look amazing during the winter months.

If you absolutely can ONLY make a morning session work, that is totally fine! I have a few suggestions that look amazing in the morning. There are a few locations that I definitely do not recommend for morning sessions because the light is just not ideal at those hours.

Downtown Lockport (February). This location, like most urban-style spots works well for a winter or snow session. The architecture and buildings add interest to photos without the need for trees or greenery.

Hadley Valley Preserve, New Lenox (October). Easy to find with an address for GPS, parking is not an issue. Ideal for evening light only. Is easily accessible for strollers or wheelchairs. Is the prettiest May-November. This location works great for larger extended family sessions. It is a nature preserve and walking path open to the public.

Birdhaven Gardens, Joliet (January). Snow sessions are amazing! With the added green from the evergreens, this location and the direction of light in the winter months, this location can really shine for snow sessions!

Pilcher Park, Joliet (Late October). This particular spot is unique in that for about 2-3 weeks during the fall, it is STUNNING!!! But ONLY in the morning and really only during those few weeks. It is a little bit of a hidden gem, not very crowded or popular so it can really work well. But I don’t love the look and light in this location the other 49-50 weeks out of the year.

Downtown Frankfort (Morning/June).

Winter, Spring, Summer, and Fall: What you need to know in choosing the right season for your Senior Session!

Starting senior year is an exciting milestone!

it’s the final stretch of high school with so many exciting things happening on the horizon. final dances, pep rallies, the final sporting events, prom, and we can’t forget graduation!

Senior year is also a busy time of a lot of planning and doing!

From college visits & applications, to scholarship essays, AP exams, and standardized testing. It can be a lot to remember and manage. I’m here to help you check one very important task off of your list - your Senior Photos!

Taking senior photos is an important tradition that captures the essence of a significant milestone in your life.

Senior photos are often used in graduation announcements and family albums, making them a cherished keepsake that marks the transition from high school to the next exciting chapter of life. They provide an opportunity for students to express their unique personalities and styles, creating lasting memories that they and their families will treasure for years to come.

It can often be confusing on WHEN exactly is the right time to schedule your Senior Photo Session. I am here to help! There are a lot of options and each season holds some specific pros and cons. So, I’m going to spell them all out for you to make scheduling your Senior Session very easy!

Summer

After your Junior year ends, and before Senior year begins

June

July

August

Summer Senior Sessions Pros:

The summer before your Senior Year officially starts is probably my most popular time to schedule Senior Photos. And there are plenty of reasons why!

The warm weather and longer daylight hours provide beautiful lighting conditions, resulting in vibrant and well-lit photos. Summer's green landscapes and colorful blooms offer beautiful backdrops, enhancing any portrait. If florals and vibrant pops of color are what you are after, a summer Senior Session is the way to go!

Scheduling a session during the summer allows for greater flexibility in choosing dates and times, reducing the stress of fitting a photo shoot into a busy senior year schedule. Early planning ensures plenty time for selecting outfits, finding the perfect location, and allowing for any necessary weather related reshoots. And by having senior photos taken in the summer, students can relax and focus on their final year of high school with one major milestone already accomplished.

The warm weather also allows for a wide range of clothing options, from light and airy sun dresses to casual shorts and stylish tops, without the need for bulky layers or outerwear. Most of my Seniors have a vision for how they want their photos to look. And if sun kissed skin and warm weather clothing are your vibe, a summer Senior Session is for you!

Summer Senior Session Cons:

Honestly, there aren’t many. But one concern can be the hot and humid weather, which can sometimes lead to sweat and hair frizz. I combat a lot of this by only scheduling my outdoor sessions at the coveted golden hour - which is right before sunset - when the day is starting to cool off. A little hairspray and a quick makeup touchup is usually all that’s needed to still look your best during the summer heat.

For some people, summer can be a busy time between college visits, work schedules, and family vacations. There is no need to worry if summer is typically too chaotic for you to want to try to plan your Senior Session. Or maybe, you want to actually start your Senior year to officially feel like a Senior. it’s all good - After all… we have 3 more seasons to go!

Another thing to consider is what will and won’t be available to you to bring to your summer Senior Session. If you play a sport and want that jersey included, you may need to contact your coach and ask to borrow it for the session. Also, a summer session will often be too early to include a college/uni choice shirt or graduation cap & gown. Not to worry though - every year during May of your Senior Year, I do host Graduation Mini Sessions where we can get some additional updated photos of you with those special items.

Fall

September

October

November

Fall Senior Session Pros:

FALL COLOR! This seems like the obvious, but one benefit of a fall Senior Session is the picturesque backdrop provided by the autumn foliage! With colors of red, orange, and yellow creating a stunning setting for the portraits. The month of September can also leave us with plenty of summer bloom color as well!

Fall can also bring a different vibe to your Senior Session as far as clothing is concerned. If layers, knits, denim, and plaids are your vibe, fall may be the perfect season to schedule your session! The cooler temperatures of fall can often make outdoor shoots more comfortable. But beware - fall in the midwest is often unpredictable - we can have heat and humidity though the beginning of October some years and we can also have plunging temps and overcast skies for weeks. If you do have your heart set on a specific outfit, there is never any guarantee that the temps will cooperate through the season. . With all fall sessions, I always suggest having multiple outfit options available and ready depending on how the weather cooperates that day.

For some Seniors, fall can be a less hectic and busy time once the predictability of the school schedule sets in. If summer is just too chaotic for you, waiting for fall may be your best bet. Fall can also work out well if you participate in a fall sport and you want to be able to include your team jersey in your session.

Fall Senior Session cons:

With ALL fall photo sessions, one main concern is the unpredictability of weather conditions. Fall weather can vary greatly from day to day and may include rain, overcast skies, or early snowfall, potentially disrupting or canceling outdoor shoots. Which brings me to the shortening time table. IF bad weather is an issue on your scheduled date and we need to reschedule, we may run the risk of running out of time. That’s not to say your session won’t happen…it just may not happen with the coveted fall color you had your heart set on.

With the unpredictable weather comes the need to be flexible with clothing options. If you absolutely have your heart set on a specific warm weather dress, it may not be best to wait until mid/late October to book your Senior Session.

Fall can also be a hectic time for some students between class schedules, testing, college applications, and sports. Only you know when your schedule will accommodate a session best.

Winter

December

January

February

Winter Senior Session pros:

SNOW! The winter landscape can provide a stunning backdrop, with snow-covered scenery offering a picturesque background for portraits. I have had a handful of Seniors over the years who really really love winter and want snow for their Senior Photos. Maybe skiing or snowboarding is your sport of choice and you want to showcase that in your portraits.

With the low angled sun, winter light can be so beautiful and soft!

A winter Senior Session also affords the possibility of having Holiday lights and decor in the backdrop of your photos. With the lack of leaves and greenery, often times urban locations are our best bet for a winter Senior Session. The charm of holiday decor around the local shops of a small downtown area often create some of my favorite backdrops for Senior Sessions.

Scheduling a winter session may be more convenient for you as you may have fewer academic commitments compared to the busy fall semester or the uncertainty of summer plans! Plus, there is also the added benefit of coming to my studio for a winter Senior Session!

Winter Senior Session Cons:

No shock to anyone residing in the Midwest, but…..COLD! Temperature and weather are the biggest drawback to a winter Senior Session. Also, snow is never a guarantee. If you REALLY want your Senior Session to feature some gorgeous snow, I am down for it! We are just going to have to be very flexible with our scheduling. Most of my snow sessions are scheduled the day or so before the snow actually falls…. often times, the morning of is when I’ll send the final “we are on!”.

But if you are up for layering up and hoping in and out of a coat between photos, I shoot outdoors year round! And I LOVE snow sessions!

Spring

The last few months of your Senior year

March

April

May

spring Senior Session pros:

Spring blooms! Spring season brings about a renewal of nature, with blooming flowers, lush greenery, and vibrant colors providing a stunning backdrop for outdoor portraits. The often mild and comfortable weather of spring allows for versatile outfit choices, from breezy dresses to casual attire, without the extremes of summer heat or winter chill. If you love tulips, cherry blossoms, and lilacs….spring is the season for you!

Spring seems to be the second most popular tine for scheduling Senior Sessions. Spring is also a very exciting time for Seniors! With prom and graduation on the horizon, most of my spring Seniors arrive to their session so excited for the end of the year with so much anticipation for the future. Most of the work of essays, tests, finals, and applications are done and a spring Senior Session can be the perfect way to cap off your school year!

A spring Senior Session also means that usually plans for the future are made… so you can easily include a college/uni shirt as well as a graduation cap & gown if you so choose.

One other small thing to consider: some boys are still doing a lot of growing and changing up through the end of High School. Spring is a very popular time for the guys to schedule their Senior Sessions. Some may look completely different from the start to the end of the school year.

Spring Senior Session Cons:

Unpredictable weather can be a concern, with spring often bringing rain, gusty winds, and fluctuating temperatures. Often in the Midwest, spring doesn’t seem to warm up until mid April, and sometimes later. Spring blooms don’t typically arrive until the beginning of May. Some of the same location and weather concerns that hold for winter, follow into a spring Senior Session. If you end up booking in the earlier part of Spring, an urban location will be your best bet.

The time crunch. By the end of your Senior year, we are on a little bit of a time crunch. While it is not absolutely necessary to have your Senior Session complete before you graduate, often times that is the goal. So, if you wait to schedule your senior session until mid spring, and we happen to get hit with a lot of unfavorable weather, we do start to run out of time to get your session in before graduation.

That being said - I routinely DO take Senior’s photos after they graduate! I currently have 2024 grads on the books though the end of June this year. So absolutely no worries if we end up cutting it a bit close to the end of Senior Year. It’s just something to keep in mind.

Most importantly, your senior session should showcase You and what makes you special!

At Sarah Jean Photography, I open up my shooting schedule one season at a time. So I am currently booking outdoor sessions through the month of August. And while the summer months seem to be the most popular choice, it’s never too early to start considering WHEN you would like to have your Senior Session take place. My fall outdoor schedule will likely open in July. Winter outdoor sessions I will usually book as they come along as the temperatures can be so unpredictable.

Embrace the Green: Why You Should Book Your Next Outdoor Photo Session in Spring or Summer!

Waiting for Autumn may not be your best bet for the easiest and most stress-free photo shoot and I’m going to tell you why!

Spring and summer offer a tapestry of colors and textures that rival even the most picturesque autumn scenes

Spring and Summer sessions offer a unique look & feel ~ From the delicate, pastel blooms of cherry & apple blossoms, to the vibrant tulips, to the lush greenery of trees and gardens, to the tall & feathery prairie grasses.

Scheduling your photography session during Spring or Summer offers practical benefits as well. With longer daylight hours and milder weather, you can enjoy extended flexibility with planning sessions without the constraints of early sunsets or chilly evening temperatures. This additional flexibility also allows plenty of time for weather related reschedules as needed without the worry of running into colder weather.

Warm, Natural Light

Spring and summer offer abundant natural light, creating a soft and flattering glow that enhances every frame. The longer daylight hours mean more flexibility in scheduling your shoot, allowing for optimal lighting conditions throughout the day.

The abundance of warm sunlight during these months bathes your surroundings in a soft, flattering glow.

Comfort and Convenience

Planning outfits for a warm weather photo session brings with it an ease and versatility that can often feel more challenging during colder fall sessions. With the sun on our side and temperatures rising, the options for attire expand exponentially. Lightweight fabrics, such as cotton and linen, reign supreme, offering both comfort and style!

The absence of bulky layers means less time worrying about coordinating coats, scarves, and gloves, and more freedom to focus on selecting pieces that reflect your personality and complement the natural surroundings. Whether it's a breezy sundress or casual shorts and a tee, the simplicity of warm weather attire allows for effortless coordination and ensures that you feel confident and comfortable throughout your photo session.

Playful and Fun Atmosphere

When it comes to capturing those precious moments with young kids and babies, opting for a warm weather photo session can make all the difference. Picture-perfect memories are best created when little ones are comfortable and content, and warmer temperatures provide just that. Unlike the chilly conditions of fall, where bundling up can often lead to crankiness and discomfort, a warm weather session allows children to move freely and enjoy themselves without the distraction of bulky clothing or cold winds.

So, when planning your next photo session with young ones in tow, consider the warmth of summer or spring – where smiles come naturally and memories are effortlessly made.

Embrace Color

During the spring and summer months, nature is in full bloom, providing a lush and vibrant backdrop for your photos. Spring and summer offer a wide array of outdoor locations to choose from, ranging from sunny meadows to lush gardens and quaint urban settings. Whether you prefer a rustic countryside vibe or a chic cityscape backdrop, the options are endless during these seasons.

Don’t forget….Spring and Summer are the PERFECT time for Senior Sessions!!

I aim to make every photography session unforgettable and capture your family at this special moment in time. You can book your photography session online or contact me to answer any questions regarding your outdoor spring or summer session.

5 Simple Ways to Make Sure Your Family Session Goes Off Without a Hitch

And… it Has Nothing to do With Perfectly Planned Outfits!

When photographing family sessions, I’ve found that many families focus on what they think is important; the matching outfits, the perfectly placed hair accessory, the unscuffed shoes, and so on. While looking “perfect” may feel like the biggest priority, family memories and photographs you’ll treasure for decades aren’t only created by what you wear.

In this blog, I break down some tips on how to achieve the best family session with as little stress as possible. Your photos should showcase your family’s personality at their best–and wearing clothes you may never wear again is not the most important piece.

Your Family Session is About YOU–Not About Who You Think You Should Be

Too often, families stress over their appearances.  Remember: these photos are for you! Forget trying to impress others, following the latest trends, or feeling like you have to look or be anything other who you really are. My advice: Be 1000% yourself–the camera loves a confident, comfortable person.

But we aren’t just talking about appearances. I have plenty of tips on what to wear and how to choose outfits in my Client Prep Packet that I share with you after you book. These tips are a lot simpler than that, and WAY more important!. They’re not necessarily ground breaking, but probably aren’t what you are thinking of either.

Tip #1: Don’t Stress!

Okay, easier said than done, but completely important.

Especially for moms. Typically, organizing family events and activities (photo sessions included) falls on mom. Many moms have enough on their plate already, so preparing for yet another family affair can feel overwhelming.

However, your family feeds off your stress, and it charges the environment with negative energy. Do your best to leave the stress at home. There is nothing to stress about with your photoshoot because I will get all the wonderful pictures you’ve invested in. Family sessions are some of my favorites, and I’ve got so much experience working with ages ranging from infants to grandparents. Trust me, we’ll get the shot, and we will get it quicker and more naturally when you remain calm and excited versus stressed and nervous.

My family sessions are fun! And if you , as the mom, set the tone that we are going to have a fun experience before you even leave the house, I promise you…that alone can make all of the difference!

Tip #2: Refrain From Discipline During The Session

The best way to get kids to cooperate is to be patient and kind.

Chances are your little ones are just as stressed as you. They are in an unfamiliar environment. They (most likely) would rather be at home playing. Correcting, and yelling at them will only enhance their stress and frustration. Doling out punishments and discipline during what is supposed to be a fun family event won’t help anyone to feel happy. Teary eyes and frowny faces are not the memories you want to have in your photos.

There is no more sure fire way to get a child to clam up and shut down during a session than when they are told they aren’t standing, smiling, or doing something “right”.

Trust me: I will get them to smile and have fun while capturing every bit of your family dynamic. Every child’s personality is so different. And one of my main goals is to capture each member of your family in a way that showcases them uniquely. When a small child is corrected, fused over, or yelled at during a session, we may lose the chance to see their true little selves come out during our short time together.

Tip #3: Avoid Micromanaging Your Kids Behavior

This one goes along with #2, but is a little more specific.

Kids will be kids! Some are curious, some are quiet, some are silly, and all have their own agenda! Most days, we're just living in their world!

At the beginning of our photo session, I let the kids do their thing and get comfortable with me. I’m a new face; it can be intimidating (especially for those babies and tots). Once your children get comfortable, they open up more. Their true personalities shine through. Trust me when I say, I know what a “real” smile is. I can tell when a child looks stiff and is forcing a “fake” smile. I have all kind of tricks up my sleeves to get even the most grump of pre-teens to genuinely smile. At my sessions, we play games and do (and say) a lot of silly things. And if I notice the kids getting a little TOO silly, I have ways of reining them back in too :)

If they need redirecting, leave it to me! There have been times when I have asked a parent to step in and help redirect one child while I work with another, so if I feel I need your help in the behavior department, I’m not afraid to ask, I promise!

Tip #4: Get Enthusiastic About All the Little Things Your Kids Do During the Photoshoot

As far as you’re concerned, every little thing they do during the session is the most special and adorable moment you’ve ever witnessed!

Happiness and enthusiasm spread like wildfire. The more excited you are about what your kids are doing, the more cooperative and happier they will be to participate. Did they find a bug? That is now the coolest bug you’ve ever seen. Did they do a cartwheel for the 10th time in a row? Awesome! That is the most magnificent cartwheel yet.

Bring that childlike play to them, and they will play back. As adults, we can forget what it feels like to be excited and curious about the world around us. But my job is to pull that playfulness and family togetherness into your photos. The more you get on their level, the more magical those finished photos will be for your family.

Tip #5: Prioritize Attitude and Emotion over Details

What you think is important and necessary is most likely not all that important to your child.

Sure, creating photos that showcase your family and feel like your household is the goal, but will matching shoes change the entire photograph that much? Not really. A happy, cooperative child is better than a grumpy one who didn’t get to wear her princess sparkle shoes. Maybe you had hopes of your son in a handsome button up collared shirt…but he’s digging his heals in on NOT wearing anything with a collar. Choose your battles because a plain t-shirt photographs just as nicely as a polo does.

I like to remind families that they are making memories. Think of what you get to look back on. Maybe those favorite sparkle shoes are forever captured during this brief moment, and that will bring love and happiness for years as you retell that story.

Real and Genuine Emotion

When you prioritize attitude and emotion, you get the best photos at the end of the day. You get calm parents, silly children, and smiles all around!

Booking an Outdoor Fall Session: What You Need to Know

Your Ultimate Guide on What to Expect for Fall Sessions Month by Month and a Few Tips from a Seasoned Professional Photographer

Summer may feel as if it has just begun, but we’re halfway through the year, and if you are thinking about a fall photography session, now is the time to start planning and thinking about booking. Fall in the Midwest, especially near Chicago, is BEAUTIFUL, but it can also be unpredictable. As a seasoned photographer in this region, I can help give a little insight into weather trends and help you decide when and if a fall photography shoot is for your family.

September

Families looking for the most predictable and seasonally friendly weather should consider September. The downside? Outfit selections often will need to trend more toward summer ware; many days are unseasonably warm and humid, reminding us that summer has only recently come to a close.

If fall color is important to your session, September may not be for you. Typically the foliage in the Chicagoland area is still quite green in September. If we’re lucky, we start seeing some change towards the end of the month, but mostly September is a cooler and less rainy version of August with small pops of that golden color here and there.

September Session Pros:

For families with small children, especially infants, early in the fall season is more comfortable and requires fewer layers and less temperamental weather. September sessions can also still have some late summer blooms for color, and weather predictability is easier. A session in September also means there is usually plenty of time for a reschedule in case one is needed due to rain.

September Session Cons:

If your fall photo session booking is specifically for peak fall foliage color, with everyone in boots and sweaters, this is not the month for you. Typically full fall color peaks in mid-October to early November. September can also get hot and humid, so being flexible with your family’s attire is necessary.

October

October has the most variables with the weather and temperature. If you live in the Midwest, you know it's a coin toss on what the days or weeks ahead may feel like. One week could be a high of 80, and next week could be a high of 56. This fluctuation makes planning outfits challenging. Some people may have their minds set on sweaters for the entire family only to find out they drew the hottest day of the month card. The beginning of October offers some warm and mild days, but as the month wears on, unpredictable weather is more prevalent.

In terms of fall color, mid-to-late October is one of the most beautiful times of the year here in the Midwest. While we can’t predict the exact days that the color will be in full swing, we can say with some certainty that you will have great color this month.

October Session Pros:

Color. The ultimate fall foliage mid to late month is the best setting for a picturesque outdoor fall session. Even in the beginning of the month, the overall green of summer is slowly fading to gold.

October Session Cons:

Unpredictable weather means you could have a beautiful sunny day, a cold blustery day, or even gray skies and drizzle… you just never know. This unpredictability makes planning outfits and dates difficult for families wanting that very fall look. Because of this, October (especially late in the month) can be tough on families with toddlers and infants.

November

Remember those crazy fall months we mentioned? November is one of the craziest months of the year for weather. Because of this, Sarah Jean Photography only schedules the first two weeks for outdoor fall sessions. Typically, as we near the holidays, I offer some mini-sessions and studio sessions, but the fall sessions will close by mid-November.

If you are considering November for your fall photography session in the Chicagoland area, you could have some of the most beautiful fall colors in your photos. The downside? A surge of bad weather and fall storms can make every last bit of color on the trees disappear overnight. November is almost always colder and requires some warm-up with blankets and coats in between pictures.

November Session Pros:

The fall color can be the most vibrant of the season, especially in early November.

November Session Cons:

Weather and dwindling time for reschedules are the biggest hurdles with scheduling in November. Unpredictable weather can lead to dips in temperature and sudden fall storms. Any windy and rainy weather can sweep your fall color away in the blink of an eye. Temps are almost always on the cooler side, so plan your outfits accordingly.

Final Tips for Your Fall Session

We still have a few months left of the warm summer sun, and it may be worth it to book a last-minute summer session and skip the unpredictable fall one. But, if you’ve got your heart set on a Midwest fall photo shoot, then remember these tips when working with Sarah Jean Photography:

Limited Availability for Fall

Fall is a busy season for many photographers, but it is also active for families. All those fall bucket list items (pumpkin patches, apple picking, sports games, etc.) can keep your family busy, leaving you and your photographer little wiggle room on booking a date that works.

Additionally, there are often few options for rescheduling due to weather. When you lock in your fall date, you must be committed to it--no matter how hot or cold.

At Sarah Jean Photography, I only reschedule for severe wind or rain.

Fall Color Fluctuates Every Year

There is no absolute when the peak fall color will be. You can make your best guess and schedule your photography session around that. Unfortunately, weather patterns and temperatures change from year to year, meaning fall color also ebbs and flows annually.

Remember: You don’t need peak color to have beautiful fall photos.

Be Prepared & Flexible with Your Wardrobe

Since the weather is unpredictable, I recommend that people have multiple outfit options at the ready. Layers are a perfect way to dress up or down for the temperature. If you can create outfits that can work with small tweaks depending on the weather or have an entirely different look picked out for a warm or cool day, you’ll feel less stressed and more prepared for your session.

Early Fall is Recommended for Small Children

Families with infants or toddlers are better off booking at the beginning of the season rather than at the end. When you have warmer days, your babies will be more comfortable, and their happy personalities will shine through in the pictures. Uncomfortable, cold littles tend to be more uncooperative and defiant of photos.

Should I Book a Studio or In-Home Newborn Photography Session?

The Pros and Cons of Both In-Home and Studio Newborn Sessions–Which is Right for Your Family?

Lifestyle Photography simplistically tells a story

Welcoming your newest addition should be simple and sweet in every possible way. There are many stressful and overwhelming moments when a baby enters your life. From sleepless nights to finding a new routine, your life goes by fast. Too fast.

Don’t miss out on those tiny fingers and tiny toes. It is the smallest your child will ever be. Save that moment in time with lifestyle photography from Sarah Jean Photography. Studio and In-home sessions are available to welcome your new addition. The only question you need to answer is: which session is right for my family?

What Is Lifestyle Photography and Why Do I Want it?

Lifestyle photography is this sweet spot between portrait photography and documentary photography, where we focus on capturing the details of the moment without overly posing the families involved.

Lifestyle simplistically tells a story.

At Sarah Jean Photography, I highlight the feel of a lifestyle session by keeping the surroundings minimal. The focus is on you and your precious little one. No elaborate props, backdrops, or accessories are needed to capture this once-in-a-lifetime moment.

Why Should I Invest in a Newborn Photography Session?

“Moments are fleeting; I want to hold on to the good ones.” -Alicia Keys

It may be impossible to imagine when your new little bundle enters the world how fast they grow. The difference between two weeks and two months old is astonishing. That sweet newborn stage moves so quickly.

Pausing this moment gives you something to look back at when your little one quickly moves from kindergarten graduation to high school graduation and beyond. Our lives move so quickly. What I do with newborn photography is preserve those new days so simplistically that you can feel all the emotions you felt on that day years later.

There is no greater investment than preserving the milestone moments of your life. This is one of those moments.

Studio vs. IN-Home Newborn Photography Sessions

I encourage every family to consider booking a newborn photography session, but not every type of session fits a family’s needs. At Sarah Jean Photography, I offer both Studio and In-Home session options so families can pick the option that fits their needs.

Not sure which session is right for your family? These pros and cons of both Studio and In-home newborn photography sessions should help you decide!

Studio Newborn Sessions

Studio sessions make it easier on the family because I do all the heavy lifting. Some of the benefits of Studio sessions:

  • No need to clean or find the “perfect” photo location in your home

  • No temptation for tv or toys for other children; home is their comfort zone, and some children are more likely to behave and cooperate in a new environment.

  • If you feel your home isn’t photo ready or if your home has little to no natural lighting, a studio session would be ideal

  • Studio sessions move quicker because I have everything set and ready to go.

The only downside to a studio session? Packing up your family and any personal touches you want to have in your photos, leaving home, and coming to my studio space in Frankfort, IL.

In-home Newborn Sessions

There is something wonderful about having your newborn photos taken in the comfort of your home if you have the right space for them. Some of the benefits of In-home sessions:

  • You don’t have to worry about leaving the house and packing your family and things to head to my studio.

  • If you have a beautifully decorated nursery you poured your heart and soul into, we can showcase that in your photos.

  • Some toddlers and older children may cooperate better in the comfort of their own home.

The one thing about In-home sessions is that they sometimes  fall a bit short of studio sessions because of the burden of prepping the space on the family. Especially with a newborn that needs attention and exhausted parents still adjusting to the new daily life.

Some cons with In-home sessions are:

  • You are left to clean, clear, and declutter any spaces you want to use for your photos. Anything you don’t want photographed has to go.

  • Your home may not have the right natural light for beautiful lifestyle pictures. Natural light depends on the direction, location, and size of your windows.

  • Sarah Jean Photography charges a $50 premium for in-home sessions vs. a studio session

Tips for a Successful Newborn Session for Your Entire Family

No matter where you decide to have your newborn session, I sincerely hope you consider capturing these once-in-a-lifetime moments with your new little one. I aim to make every newborn session casual and comfortable. I want you to be relaxed and overjoyed at taking these photos with your newborn!

To make your session successful, here are a few tips for your entire family:

Wear comfortable clothing in neutral colors. Moms–you just had a baby! You should feel content with what you are wearing. Loose-fitting clothing always makes mamas feel and look their best with baby.

Feed baby 1.5-2 hours before your session starts, and plan for one more feed during the session.

Have something to occupy siblings while they are not being photographed.

Bring a change of clothes just in case (accidents happen!)

Bring any toys or props you would like in the photos to your studio session.

Relax and enjoy this magical experience for your family–it really is once-in-a-lifetime!
