The Pros and Cons of Both In-Home and Studio Newborn Sessions–Which is Right for Your Family?
Lifestyle Photography simplistically tells a story
Welcoming your newest addition should be simple and sweet in every possible way. There are many stressful and overwhelming moments when a baby enters your life. From sleepless nights to finding a new routine, your life goes by fast. Too fast.
Don’t miss out on those tiny fingers and tiny toes. It is the smallest your child will ever be. Save that moment in time with lifestyle photography from Sarah Jean Photography. Studio and In-home sessions are available to welcome your new addition. The only question you need to answer is: which session is right for my family?
What Is Lifestyle Photography and Why Do I Want it?
Lifestyle photography is this sweet spot between portrait photography and documentary photography, where we focus on capturing the details of the moment without overly posing the families involved.
Lifestyle simplistically tells a story.
At Sarah Jean Photography, I highlight the feel of a lifestyle session by keeping the surroundings minimal. The focus is on you and your precious little one. No elaborate props, backdrops, or accessories are needed to capture this once-in-a-lifetime moment.
Why Should I Invest in a Newborn Photography Session?
“Moments are fleeting; I want to hold on to the good ones.” -Alicia Keys
It may be impossible to imagine when your new little bundle enters the world how fast they grow. The difference between two weeks and two months old is astonishing. That sweet newborn stage moves so quickly.
Pausing this moment gives you something to look back at when your little one quickly moves from kindergarten graduation to high school graduation and beyond. Our lives move so quickly. What I do with newborn photography is preserve those new days so simplistically that you can feel all the emotions you felt on that day years later.
There is no greater investment than preserving the milestone moments of your life. This is one of those moments.
Studio vs. IN-Home Newborn Photography Sessions
I encourage every family to consider booking a newborn photography session, but not every type of session fits a family’s needs. At Sarah Jean Photography, I offer both Studio and In-Home session options so families can pick the option that fits their needs.
Not sure which session is right for your family? These pros and cons of both Studio and In-home newborn photography sessions should help you decide!
Studio Newborn Sessions
Studio sessions make it easier on the family because I do all the heavy lifting. Some of the benefits of Studio sessions:
No need to clean or find the “perfect” photo location in your home
No temptation for tv or toys for other children; home is their comfort zone, and some children are more likely to behave and cooperate in a new environment.
If you feel your home isn’t photo ready or if your home has little to no natural lighting, a studio session would be ideal
Studio sessions move quicker because I have everything set and ready to go.
The only downside to a studio session? Packing up your family and any personal touches you want to have in your photos, leaving home, and coming to my studio space in Frankfort, IL.
In-home Newborn Sessions
There is something wonderful about having your newborn photos taken in the comfort of your home if you have the right space for them. Some of the benefits of In-home sessions:
You don’t have to worry about leaving the house and packing your family and things to head to my studio.
If you have a beautifully decorated nursery you poured your heart and soul into, we can showcase that in your photos.
Some toddlers and older children may cooperate better in the comfort of their own home.
The one thing about In-home sessions is that they sometimes fall a bit short of studio sessions because of the burden of prepping the space on the family. Especially with a newborn that needs attention and exhausted parents still adjusting to the new daily life.
Some cons with In-home sessions are:
You are left to clean, clear, and declutter any spaces you want to use for your photos. Anything you don’t want photographed has to go.
Your home may not have the right natural light for beautiful lifestyle pictures. Natural light depends on the direction, location, and size of your windows.
Sarah Jean Photography charges a $50 premium for in-home sessions vs. a studio session
Tips for a Successful Newborn Session for Your Entire Family
No matter where you decide to have your newborn session, I sincerely hope you consider capturing these once-in-a-lifetime moments with your new little one. I aim to make every newborn session casual and comfortable. I want you to be relaxed and overjoyed at taking these photos with your newborn!
To make your session successful, here are a few tips for your entire family:
Wear comfortable clothing in neutral colors. Moms–you just had a baby! You should feel content with what you are wearing. Loose-fitting clothing always makes mamas feel and look their best with baby.
Feed baby 1.5-2 hours before your session starts, and plan for one more feed during the session.
Have something to occupy siblings while they are not being photographed.
Bring a change of clothes just in case (accidents happen!)
Bring any toys or props you would like in the photos to your studio session.
Relax and enjoy this magical experience for your family–it really is once-in-a-lifetime!
